A True Black Box Theater Experience

Simple Design
Powerful Experience

What is a Black Box Theater?

Popular since the 1920's, Black Box Theaters are known for their flexibility and simple design. This unique space offers the ability to transform a scene through flexible staging and a variety of lighting configurations.

It's All About

CONNECTION

More importantly, a Black Box Theater serves the greater purpose of connecting the audience to the performers in a purposeful and uninterrupted way.

This 80-seat venue is an ideal setting for one-act plays, oratory competitions, poetry slams, musical artists, rehearsals, recitals, lectures, and so much more.

Help From Our Friends

Philanthropists Tom and Kathy McPherson funded the Wellard Hall facility transformation that created the “Black Box” theater that bears their name.  The McPhersons have been life-long supporters of the arts and of education. As a member and officer of the Sandhills Community Foundation Board, Kathy has been a dedicated friend of the college’s Guarantors Program and its commitment to expanding opportunity for Sandhills students.

Our Gratitude

Kathy and Tom are leaders in a host of activities that support and improve our community - from the arts and education to social and public service.  The McPherson Theater honors Tom and Kathy McPherson and thanks them for the generosity that enabled Sandhills to create this delightful venue for performance.
